Me Buckley was the first male teacher I had at OLV. He brought a whole new slant to my educational expierience. His humor and style added so much to the classroom. I think we all worked a bit harder to impress him. He brought out the best in us both academically and socially.
He was the inspiration for my career choice in Speech Education, both Arts and Sciences.
As a Public School Speech Therapist I was working under the supervision of Mr Buckley's life long friend and I got to know "Gene" as the intelligent, funny, caring man that he was! I felt honored to be able to call him Gene.
Even as his memory began to betray him, when I did see him he would always ask about my "Valley" friends and classmates, usually by name.
This was the first year in my memory I was not able to get a St. Patrick's Day card off to him. He often said,"you can forget my birthday, but don't forget St Patrick's Day". Mr. Buckley, Gene, I will never forget you again! I know of a few people up there with you who will be enjoying your company and together you guys will never run out of things to say!
Heaven is a bit brighter with those Irish eyes twinkling!

I was in the Class of 1972 at Fair Lawn High School and very much enjoyed my speech class with Mr. Buckley. He used language as a sharp tool rather than a blunt instrument. My sympathies to his family on the loss of a fine man.

Mr Buckley was my favorite teachers. He believed in me and gave me the confidence to give a speech in front of the class despite a stutter and not comfortable talking in general. That one act may have been the spark I needed to start my journey to self confidence I finally took. God speed Eugene and thanks

My heart goes out to the family of Gene Buckley.
He was my colleague and good friend at Fair Lawn High School, and he was also my
daughter's teacher. We are both grateful to him for making learning comfortable and
making his classroom a place that offered warmth and safety for all.
He shall really be missed.

Gene was a wonderful friend of over 45 years. We traveled to Italy together and since he didn't speak Italian, I never told him that he went in and out of the ladies' room. Each summer he came to Maine. To my daughter he was "Uncle" Gene. We enjoyed many seasons of Papermill Playhouse. He taught Meg and me how to dance so we could dance the "Mother-Daughter" dance at her wedding. We had so many laughs together.
Our friendship began at Fair Lawn High School. He was on the interview team and we always kidded I got my job because he missed my interview. Gene was dead set against hiring an ex-nun but I quickly won him over because he was such a good person with such a good heart.
He was every married teacher's date for the Senior prom when their husbands didn't want to go. He was generous and caring. And he had that great big smile. He took wonderful care of his mother and the many aunts who lived with him over the years. he was a kind friend to all and we will all miss him.

Mr. Buckley was one of the best teachers that I ever had. One never really knows what happens to our former teachers and mentors once we leave school. I am from the class of FLHS 1970 and I remember his class like it was yesterday. I hope he knew what a lasting impression he made on his former students. May he rest in peace.

When I first started teaching I shared a student work period assignment with Gene--about 50 students in the cafeteria few of whom were interested in doing school work. I learned so much from Gene then about how to keep order with humor and good will. I continued to learn from Gene through the years and to value his friendship. I pray he is already in heaven, keeping the angels laughing.

To the family of Gene Buckley,
Even though I have not seen MR. BUCKLEY for many years now, he has never been far away in thought. He was the beloved teacher of all three of my children when they attended Fair Lawn High. He was especially close to and a mentor toward my oldest son Timothy Frick.
When Tim was sending in his college applications, Gene wrote his letter of recommendation which I still have tucked in my bible for all of these years (1988). It is a treasure that I hold dear.
He came to our home for dinner on a couple of occasions as we always felt he was a family member. He will always be very dear to us all.
Our sincere sympathies go out to you and to all of those lives he touched.

Mr. Buckley taught me to so much... not just about English and speaking properly, although I will never be able to say "can" the same way again.
He taught me about myself and my self worth.
He will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
Rest In Peace Mr, Buckley!

I graduated in 1981 from FLHS and still remember Mr. Buckley as one of my favorite teachers, and certainly the one with the sharpest wit. He showed up at our 30th High School reunion and it was so wonderful to see him again. RIP, although I suspect he is busy in heavan correcting God making sure He speaks proper English.
